i'm sure that all of you have sites you go to every day and i'm no different. i check my mail, hit up perezhilton, tmz, and my favorite wedding blog site-- weddingbee.com as i was browsing the blogs and pretty pictures i happened upon an announcement made by mrs. bee (originator and head editor of the site). she had sold the site.
for years i had browsed the site and followed the stories of each of the bloggers (or bees of the hive). it's kind of funny but i felt a bit of a bond with some of the bloggers and this was even before i had gotten engaged. so where does this moral dilemma come into play?
so mrs. bee had sold the site to eharmony. what's the big fuss right? they match ppl up who are looking for mates. many may not know this but eharmony was founded on christian principles and does not currently match homosexual couples. i hold the belief that homosexual couples have just as much of a right to be together as any heterosexual couple. however, being of the faith that i am i am forced to take a hard look at both and i'm very conflicted.
in mrs. bee's defense she did not sell the site to just turn a profit. many sites were trying to buy weddingbee or threatening to create their own versions of the blog to rival that of weddingbee. perhaps she sold the site for mere survival purposes, however i am saddened in her choice of who she decided to sell to.
i've been reading the comments and many readers have decided that they can no longer support a site that will be run by a company who does not fully support marriage equality. just a few months ago mrs. gingerbread began blogging as the first homosexual bee to the hive. due to this recent event she has since decided to leave the blog as well as 3 other bloggers (possibly more now). here is a snippit of what she had to say:
"I’d like to piggy back onto what Mrs. Lovebug said. This post was a long time coming and had to be reviewed by eHarmony higher ups several times and was edited in several places."
although eharmony has told mrs. bee that she will remain head of editing and that no major changes will be made to the site the statement above made by mrs. gingerbread worries me.
being in the world of online advertising i know how important it is when ads are seen by readers (much less clicked on). even though mrs. bee does not agree with eharmony's practices and vows to reach out to homosexual bloggers and readers alike i cannot help but think that she will still be helping eharmony make money in the meantime.
after reading through over 200+ comments i have decided that i can no longer support the blog. eharmony has also bought out Project Wedding--another site i frequented.
am i being overly dramatic? perhaps...i'm still sad though.
